One interesting thing I read in The Essential Bible Companion was about the prophets:

While early prophets dealt primarily with the king, in the eighth century BC the prophets turn much of their attention to the people and begin to call them to a renewed faithfulness to the covenant.
Prior books had the prophets speaking to the kings.  These books are to the people, and the prophets are trying to get their attention and point them towards God.  The relationship is in jeopardy since they are being unfaithful.  The prophets are in the end unsuccessful, and both Israel and Judah fall to foreign powers allowed by God to conquer them.
