About that Mandate...

Let's catch up on some reading material regarding the insurance mandate.

Every Single Bishop Has Condemned the Obama/HHS Mandate!

[Bishop Lori] also responded to Catholic Health Association’s positive reaction to the new policy, which the Obama administration has been using to justify its decision. “Catholic Health Association does not speak for the Church as a whole,” Bishop Lori said. “The Catholic bishops speak for the Church as a whole.”

So, to summarize, the bishops are stating they won't comply and Obama is stating he won't back down. That's not good.  We must pray for our Bishops!

But, it isn't just the Bishops.  Not all (and in fact only a few) Catholic organizations are for the mandate.  Sisters of Mary issue statement on the President’s “compromise.” Those are the nuns who are were on Oprah. The conservative teacher ones.

Twelve attorneys general threaten to sue over contraception mandate
In a Feb. 10 letter, the attorneys general voiced their “strong opposition” to the mandate, which they called “an impermissible violation of the Constitution's First Amendment virtually unparalleled in American history.”

The birth-control coverage mandate violates the First Amendment's bar against the "free exercise" of religion. But it also violates the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. That statute, passed unanimously by the House of Representatives and by a 97-3 vote in the Senate, was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993. It was enacted in response to a 1990 Supreme Court opinion, Employment Division v. Smith.
