Blessed are they

In Pope Benedict's book, Jesus of Nazareth, he discusses the Beatitudes.  I highlighted a section relative to this one in particular:
Matthew 5:10  Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Pope Benedict says
The people who are persecuted for righteousness' sake are those who live by God's righteousness - by faith.  Because man constantly strives for emancipation from God's will in order to follow himself alone, faith will always appear as a contradiction to the "world" - to the ruling powers at any given time.  For this reason, there will be persecution for the sake of righteousness in every period of history.
This caught my attention at this time in this place because of the subtle and not so subtle ways we are persecuted for our faith.  I often find myself asking why that happens and grow frustrated when it feels like those in power are against us.  It isn't an oddity though - this is perfectly normal behavior for the world.  We are the odd ones.  We are the ones out of place.  And we always will be.  May we always live up to it!
